-
- How, you may ask, can a software distributor do it? Simple, we don't
- write all these programs, you do. You and people like you that
- understand and respect the IBM PC. We have searched the country for the
- best software available and have created this outstanding library of
- User Supported and Public Domain programs for you.
-
- We've been in the computer business since 1970 and have seen a lot of
- trends come and go. We feel that the current Public Domain phenomenon
- is one of the best things to happen since the punched card and we would
- like you to be part of it. This is your chance to have the quality
- programs that you need at a very affordable price. PBS supplies the
- disks, the copying service and the expertise to select, evaluate and
- provide you with the very best.

- RATINGS KEY
-
- Disk Ratings Program Ratings
-
- TROPHY Trophy - Tremendous. Generally, anything listed this way
- is as good as OR BETTER than any commercial program
- that performs the same functions.
-
- **** Invaluable disk. Superb, a masterpiece,
- Worth $50 much less $5. elegant, etc.
-
- *** Very good - you won't Very good - fills the
- be disappointed. bill well.
-
- ** Might well do the job. Works well.
-
- * Probably worth $5. Interesting at least.
-
- Anything not rated hasn't been exhaustively tested by us.
-
- 3 COMPATIBILITY
-
- All disks are 5 1/4 inch, MS-DOS (PC-DOS) 2.0 or higher DS/DD (360K)
- format.
-
- Although most programs will work on the AT, PC Jr, and most compatible
- computers, testing has been done only on an IBM PC/XT and no guarantees
- of compatibility are given unless specifically stated.
-
- See page 9 for USAGE NOTES.
-
-
-
- There are five major areas of compatibility that you might need to be
- concerned with:
-
- Graphics - The Heath/Zenith Z100 (not Z150 series), Sanyo 550
- series and others that have non-standard screen graphics will not run
- any of these graphics products. Even an IBM Monochrome monitor with a
- Hercules card won't work. This includes the Arcade, Astronomy,
- Graphics, and some of the Communications, Educational, Games,
- Individual Accounting, Math, Languages (ML), Music, Spreadsheet, and
- Word processing disks where graphics is noted.
-
- Basic Language - Programs written in interpreted BASIC (with a
- .BAS extension) must have MS-BASIC. Minor re-writes may need to be
- done (by you) for GW-BASIC and others. This affects those disks and
- programs noted "BASIC". See the usage notes on page 9 for
- tips on running Basic language programs. Note that Compaq, Eagle,
- Tandy's BASICA and BetterBasic appear to be completely compatible.
-
- Communications - Most true compatibles have the same interrupt
- structure as IBM. The communication systems will only work on
- these. Kermit (CO5.2) and TMJR21 (CO11.1) is available for the PC Jr
- but no other communication programs will work on the Jr.
-
- DOS Interrupts - Although most public domain systems are not IBM
- specific, some DOS Resident programs use IBM interrupts that keep
- them from working on not-very-close-compatible machines like the Z100,
- Sanyo 550 series, etc. or with some other DOS Resident programs like
- Sidekick. This affects the utilities marked (D/R).
-
- Printers - Most Public Domain Programs are written for the Epson
- printer. These also work on IBM Graphics, Okidata (with Plug 'n'
- Play), Star, Gemini, TI800 series and others with compatible
- graphics and text print protocols. Many programs support the more
- popular printers and most will work with any dot matrix or daisywheel
- to produce reports since all printers available use the standard ASCII
- character set.
-
- 4 TECHNICAL INFORMATION
-
- All disks are 5 1/4 inch, MS-DOS (PC-DOS) 2.0 or higher DS/DD (360K)
- format.
-
- Although most programs will work on the AT, PC Jr, and most compatible
- computers, testing has been done only on an IBM PC/XT and no guarantees
- of compatibility are given unless specifically stated.
-
- All disks are guaranteed to be readable and the programs are guaranteed
- not to be misrepresented by us. All are thought to contain only legally
- copyable software. If anyone knows otherwise, please let us know
- immediately.
-
- Even though you buy the disks and the cataloging and copying service
- from us, you are not relieved of a moral (and sometimes legal)
- obligation to acknowledge the authors of the programs with financial
- remuneration. Doing so will enable the authors to produce more quality,
- affordable software. Many of the systems in this library are
- copyrighted material.
-
- This catalog, in both printed and disk form, and the full collection of
- disks and the several individual disk collections are copyrighted
- material held by Public Brand Software and may not be blatantly copied
- for commercial purposes except under license. Please feel free to make
- copies of our disks to give to your friends, but don't make multiple
- copies to sell to the general public.
-
- We disclaim any damage that any of the software in this library may
- cause and cannot guarantee that any particular system follows sound
- business practices. Our sole liability will consist of a refund of the
- purchase price.

- TELEPHONE SUPPORT
-
- Face it, at $5 per disk we cannot serve as unpaid consultants or to
- teach you DOS, especially on an 800 number. Before you call with a
- problem, please make sure that you are familiar with your DOS manual and
- have read the notes in the back of this catalog and the documentation
- for the program. Of course, if there is a problem with the disk or the
- software, please let us know immediately.
-
- 6 USER SUPPORTED SOFTWARE
-
- Many of the systems in this library have been placed in the Public
- Domain by their authors and, as such, may be copied freely by anyone.
- Sort of like Shakespeare plays.
-
- You will also find much User Supported software in this catalog.
- Sometimes called Freeware, Shareware, or other names, User Supported
- software is a concept that is not understood by everyone. Basically,
- the authors of User Supported software retain all rights to the software
- under the copyright laws and simply allow distribution of their systems
- to be done freely or with few restrictions.
-
- You may, of course, look at, keep, copy, etc. this type of software, but
- if you use it you are asked to register your use with the author. In
- most cases a registration fee is required that ranges from $5.00 to
- $89.00. In return, you get (depending on the author) a bound manual,
- quick reference cards, update notices, free updates, telephone support,
- source code, customization, or other niceties. In all cases, the
- registration fee is far less than the selling price of comparable
- commercial software.
-
- We feel that if you like a piece of software and are going to depend on
- it then the registration fee is a cheap way to:
-
- 1) Ensure that you have the support of the author
- 2) Ensure that you will know about updates, bug notices and fixes.
- 3) Encourage the author to make their computer system even better.
-
- The advantages of the User Supported method of distribution are real.
- You get a chance to test the software on your computer to make sure it
- is compatible with your other systems and to make sure that it works to
- your satisfaction before you "buy" it with your registration. The
- authors need not advertise their products; this allows the price to be
- low. Not needing to fund an advertising campaign lets the author retain
- control rather than having to sell the rights to a software producer.
-
- Many times, software written for a specific company or client that is
- not destined to be commercially sold is an ideal candidate for User
- Supported distribution. The best of these can be found in this library.
-
- 7 PUBLIC DOMAIN CONTEST
-
- The 1st Public Brand Software Public Domain Software Contest was such a
- moderate success that we are going to do it again. The rules for the
- 2nd Public Brand Software Public Domain Software Contest are easy:
-
- Send us your original MS-DOS software offering for inclusion in the
- catalog. All submissions must be by the original author(s). Software
- must be for Public Domain or User Supported distribution. Both private
- individuals and companies are eligible.
-
- We will judge the best and award a 1st place ($100.00 worth of PBS
- software), and a 2nd place ($50.00 worth of PBS software) in each of 4
- categories. The winners, of course, may choose the software. Don't
- feel constrained by these categories, special awards may be given for
- new concepts.
-
- The categories:
-
- Utility Programs (suitable for an Utility Disk).
- Application Programs (Accounting, Word Processing, Astronomy, Math,
- Hobbies, Ham Radio, Database Mangers, etc.)
- Games and Entertainment (including Arcade games and music).
- Language & Commercial Systems Support (Pascal, C, Basic, Lotus, dBase, etc.
- subroutines, source managers, compilers, etc.)
-
- Entries must be received by 12/31/86 and must be new in 1986.
-
- 8 NOTES FOR THE NEW USER
-
- Read the USAGE NOTES on page 9; it should explain everything
- if you are familiar with your computer. If it doesn't, DON'T PANIC.
- Here's some step-by-step tips that might help.
-
- 1) Put the disk in the A: drive, type DIR and press enter. If it
- scrolls off the screen too fast, you can press <Ctrl>-S (hold down the
- Ctrl key and press S) to stop the scrolling temporarily. Press the
- space bar to continue.
-
- 2) In the DIR listing, you will find files that are named like:
-
- READ.ME PBS.TXT ANYTHING.DOC
-
- 3) The .DOC and .TXT stand for Documentation and Text. These files can
- be looked at or printed out. Any PBS.TXT files are very important; they
- are written by us. To look at the documentation type TYPE PBS.TXT and
- press enter. The word TYPE is a DOS command. You would replace PBS.TXT
- with whatever document you want to see, but look at these files
- first. The <Ctrl>-S trick will stop the screen. You can also send the
- output to your printer as well as to your screen. <Ctrl>-PrtSc will make
- everything you see will be printed. Press <Ctrl>-PrtSc to stop
- printing.
-
- Instructions in PBS.TXT files to un-archive datasets usually refer to
- drive B: and blank disks. If you are using a hard disk, you should
- create a subdirectory (MD\dir) and go to that directory (CD\dir) then
- issue the A:ARC ... instructions.
-
- If you run into trouble still with your PCompatible there are a number
- of places to turn for help. A local User Group is an excellent place to
- learn, people are always around to answer your questions. There are
- quite a few good books on MS-DOS at your local bookstore or library.
-
- Lastly, the authors of the software can help but bear in mind that
- authors of User Supported programs are usually annoyed (and rightfully
- so) by lots of questions from non-registered users. You will get better
- results if your registration fee accompanies your question.
-
- 9 USAGE NOTES
-
- You will find that using the software in this library is very easy.
- There are just a few things that are important to know:
-
- Documentation - There is plenty of documentation. The first thing to do
- is to get a DIR listing of the disk and find the files named READ.ME,
- PBS.TXT, etc or with extensions like .DOC or .TXT. Just TYPE these
- files to the screen - the command to type PBS.TXT would be "TYPE
- PBS.TXT" (without the quotes, of course). Pressing <Ctrl> and P will
- toggle your printer on to send the text to the printer as well.
-
- Backup Disks - Always copy the files from the original disk to a
- "working" disk before you use them. Since MS-DOS (PC-DOS) and Basic are
- NOT on Public Brand Software disks, it is a good idea to copy the
- software to a disk with DOS already present. These disks can be
- prepared by the "FORMAT /S" command. COPY BASIC*.* to the new disk if
- needed. Then, when copying PBS disks, use COPY *.* rather than DISKCOPY
- so you don't write over the MS-DOS files. If everything doesn't fit,
- just make two disks.
-
- Running Programs - Programs with extensions of ".COM" or ".EXE" are
- ready to execute and are called up by just giving the filename as a
- command. For example, the program BEAST.COM is run by just typing
- "BEAST" (without the quotes of course) and pressing return.
-
- Basic - Programs with extensions of ".BAS" are written in BASIC language
- and are to be run with the BASIC interpreter. "BASICA" should be used
- in most instances rather than BASIC or GW-BASIC (see discussion on
- compatibility on page 3). For example, the program BOGGLE.BAS is run by
- just typing "BASICA BOGGLE" (without the quotes of course) and pressing
- return. If Basic language programs end and leave you with an "ok"
- prompt the command "SYSTEM" will return you to DOS.
-
- ARC - Files with an extension of ".ARC" are sets of data put together to
- save space on the disk. Directions to separate the archived files can
- be found in "PBS.TXT" files.
-
- Registration - Please feel free to copy any of the software in this
- catalog and pass it on to your friends. This is especially attractive
- for businesses and schools but be aware that several of these systems
- require you to register your use (especially for commercial purposes)
- with the author (usually a small payment is involved). The benefits of
- registration are many:
-
- Depending on the author you may get updates as they are published,
- printed documentation, telephone support, pre-printed forms, and even
- customization and more powerful versions of the software.
-
- But the best reason to register is that it encourages authors to keep
- producing more Public Domain Software for all of us at affordable
- prices.
-

- more useful than those that were supplied with your computer. We
- suggest that they be put onto a disk with your other often used DOS
- commands like PRINT, FORMAT, etc. or that they be put onto a \UTIL or
- \DOS subdirectory on your hard disk for instant access (via a path).

- WP1a.3/WP1b.3 ****TROPHY
- PC-WRITE Updated
- 2 Disks
-
- Version 2.7 is every bit as powerful and as fully functional a word
- processor as IBM's Displaywrite 3, Multimate, Word Perfect, etc.
-
- Support is included for hundreds of different popular printers as well
- as full LaserJet Support. It is very easy to add new printers as we did
- for our QUADLaser. It also has the most powerful mailmerge in the
- industry.
-
- All the features that you could ask for are included. Help system, PCJr
- support, one- finger typing, decimal tabs, word count, smart pagination,
- footnotes, automatic page numbering, index & table of contents
- generation, proportional font alignment, micro- justification, split
- screen, keystroke macros, and all the normal stuff you find in
- professional word processors. It even has a file conversion facility.
-
- You can even redefine the keys to customize it to your taste. Works on
- ASCII files as a text editor. This catalog was written and typeset with
- PC-WRITE.
-
- Now, Version 2.7 has a 45,000 word SPELLING CHECKER. It can check your
- spelling as you type or be used as a stand-alone utility to check entire
- documents. Of course, you may add your own words to the dictionary.
- 320K needed to use the spelling checker. This addition makes PC-WRITE a
- must-have system for everyone. Even if you have and are used to one of
- the "simple" word processors like PFS-Write or Writing Assistant,
- PC-WRITE's spelling checker can be used to check your work. It works
- with WordStar files like any of Micro-Pro's offerings.

- for classes of users, "conferences", "doors", graphics and music. It
- now supports multiple RBBS systems running on the same computer. With
- enough serial ports, up to 36 bulletin boards may access the same files.
- You need a modem that is Hayes compatible and a hard disk is
- recommended.
-
- Note that CO2a.5 has the .EXE's, CO2b.5 has over 120 pages of
- documentation. We highly recommend that you also get CO3.5 (below) for
- support programs to make the sysop's duties easier.

- look for the message passing capabilities. You need not join the
- national network to set up your own electronic mail service.

- 41 CENSUS ***
-
- Public Brand Software is probably the biggest distributor of the US
- Census Bureau data. We offer the 1980 census figures on disk for MS-DOS
- machines. This same data is available from Washington at $60 for the
- first disk and $12 for each disk after that. There are 14 disks in the
- PBS set which contains everything on the 44 disks available by
- Washington. $60 total from us, $600 from them. Just another typical
- Public Brand Software bargain. (You will need to unsqeeze all these
- files in order to use them).
-
- In order to use the information available you will need to get both:
-
- 1) Documentation, Dictionary, and Program disk. (CE1.0)
-
- 2) Data disks for one or more states (CE2.0 thru CE14.0)
-
- The first disk (CE1.0) contains both PBS and Census Bureau
- documentation, a data dictionary, and a Utility program that uses the
- data dictionary. The Utility program can be used to consolidate data,
- split out data, or to put place names on data files.
-
- The data disks contain 72 individual files per state. These files
- consist of the census data for each county such as: land area;
- population by race, age, sex, marital status; households; marriages;
- divorces; births; deaths; hospital, social security, housing,
- occupation, crime, education, earnings, governmental revenue, welfare,
- tax, manufacturing, retail trade, debt, banking, weather, and farm
- information. In all over 300 pieces of data per county. There are
- state summaries for all these items also.
-
- In addition, 19 key items are detailed for each place (incorporated or
- not) of over 2500 population.
-
- All data files are prepared in comma delimited format for inclusion into
- database or spreadsheet systems. There is documentation provided to
- help with this task.
-
